The moving procedure and to-do list

Moving tends to feel like “so much to do — where do I even start?” Organized by timeline, you can proceed smoothly with nothing missed.

For a move, what to do shifts across “after contract → the day → after move-in.” Organize and check by timing.

About one month before

  • Give notice on your current place (check the notice period in the contract)
  • Contract the new place & prepare initial costs
  • Book the moving company (earlier is cheaper)
  • Dispose of unwanted items / arrange bulky-waste collection

About two weeks to a few days before

  • Move-out notification (city office) / postal forwarding
  • Utility procedures (stop & start electricity, gas, water)
  • Internet line transfer or new application (activation can take time)
  • Start packing (from things you don’t use)

On the day

  • Drain the fridge and washing machine
  • Clean the old place, check for left-behind items, do the walk-through
  • Receive keys at the new place, move items in, check for initial defects

After moving in (soon)

  • Move-in notification (within 14 days of moving as a guide)
  • Change of address on license, My Number, banks, credit cards, etc.
  • Update the registered address with your employer and various services
Public procedures, don’t forget
  • Move-out / move-in notification (or change-of-address notice)
  • My Number address change
  • National Health Insurance / pension (if applicable)
