Your first time living alone — what to get

What to buy, and in what order? You don’t need everything perfect from day one. Prioritize and start without strain.

Think of solo-living items in three groups — “needed from day one,” “wanted in the first few days,” and “gradually later” — to spread out both spending and effort.

Needed first (move-in to a few days)

  • Bedding (mattress, futon, pillow)
  • Curtains (measure and have them ready before move-in)
  • Lighting (if not built in)
  • Fridge, washing machine, microwave
  • Minimal cookware and tableware
  • Trash can & bags (check your municipality’s rules), cleaning tools
  • Toilet paper, towels, toiletries

Gradually later

  • Sofa, low table, TV
  • Storage furniture, bookshelf
  • Seasonal appliances (heater, dehumidifier, etc.)

Before buying, measure

For furniture and appliances, measure not just the installation space but the carry-in route (entrance, hallway, stairs, elevator) to avoid mistakes. The fridge, washing machine and bed especially need care.

Renting is a smart option too

For short stays or to keep initial costs down, renting furniture and appliances works well. At StandUp we offer a furniture & appliance rental service, exclusively for clients who sign through us.

Reassuring to have on day one
  • Bedding, curtains, toilet paper
  • Phone charger, extension cord
  • A few days of clothes, toiletries, regular medicine
  • Box cutter, screwdriver (for unpacking/assembly)
